The Hungry Yak.
Australia’s five best pub meals
in one place.
Returning in 2020.

Aussie pub food has come a long way and now rivals any cuisine around the world.

Problem is, the best versions of these meals are scattered around the country and it’s almost impossible to sample them all. Or is it?

Throughout September, Yak Brewing called upon millions of Australian tastebuds to help find the best pub meals from around the country. And after thousands of votes, we’ve uncovered the top 5, which will all come together in a new pub experience. Australia’s best are (drum roll please…)

· Chicken Parma from The Birmingham Hotel (VIC)

· Rib Eye Steak from the Royal Hotel Queanbeyan (NSW)

· Fish and Chips from Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel (NSW)

· K.F.C Halloumi Burger from The Henson (NSW)

· Smoked BBQ Ribs from The Pier Bar Cairns (QLD)

Wouldn’t it be great if you could try all the best pub meals at one place?

Introducing The Hungry Yak. A super-pub pop-up that served Australia’s best pub meals all under one roof. Each meal was paired with a different Yak beer to make the ultimate all-star pub menu.

Yak Brewing’s Pub Meal Expert

Yak Brewing has partnered with Aussie Comedian, Harley Breen to help choose Australia’s best pub meals. Harley has been a touring comedian for the past 19 years so he’s definitely had his fair share of pub meals over this time. Whether Harley does a show in a regional town or in a metro-city, from his experiences, he knows that he can rely on getting a good feed, a great beer and have a yarn with a local at the local pub.

Yaks and Food

We know that when deciding what alcoholic drink to have with your favourite meal, beer might not be the natural default. But Why the Yak Not?

Yaks offers 5 different brews that have a range of taste and flavour profiles meaning they are the perfect choice to accompany your favourite pub meal.

Read more below to discover what meal best pairs with your choice of protein:

Fat Yak and Steak

The Yak’s original. Our iconic brew is full of flavour… A big and bold brew just as the name suggests!

Fat Yak’s bold, hoppy notes will add a bit of sizzle to your steak. Its rich, malty mid palate brings out the flavoursome, smooth, rich flavours of any red meat so you know you’re onto a winner here.

Wild Yak and Chicken Parma

With subtle aromas of melon and passionfruit nestled together with new world hops, the flavours in this South Seas Yak sing out like a forest full of parakeets.

Wild Yak’s crisp, tropical taste will make your chicken soar. It’s fresh and a little bit fruity and its crispness perfectly balances the lightness of chicken. Its light palate also matches with mild cheeses. So this infamous combination of chicken and cheese lends itself to a Wild Yak!

Lazy Yak and Burger

A smooth and malty beast, with a light, refreshing finish and lower ABV that’s best enjoyed while doing a whole lotta nothing.

Lazy Yak is smooth, subtly sweet and has a citrusy backdrop. With a lighter bitterness, this beer compliments the juiciness of a burger that will make one of your favourite pub meals sing.

Lumber Yak and Fish & Chips

This Yak is a refreshing chip off the old block. Brewed at our mountainside brewery, this cider delivers a real apple taste that is so good you’ll want to sing from the mountains ‘yak-el-ay-eee-ooo’!

Lumber Yak is fruity, crisp and refreshing. Its light apple notes and subtle flavours pairs well with the freshness and delicateness of fish. But we can’t forget the chips! The clean, crisp finish in this cider will cut through the saltiness of those crunchy, delicious yellow gems.

Rusty Yak and Pork Ribs

As with any family, some characters don’t fit inside the box. The fiery beast of the herd, packed with an aromatic ginger beer punch delivers a great tasting, refreshing ginger beer.

Rusty Yak’s gingery punch will make your pork pop. Pork ribs’ mouthwatering, rich flavours are balanced by the prickly finish of our sweet & spicy ginger beer.

And don’t forget, Rusty Yak is always served best with a wedge of lime.
